I think it's going to be more exploring and puzzles than outright combat, since there's no xp to gain, but it's largely up to you. I've not worked out the effectiveness of armor yet, but as of now fighting naked is strongly discouraged. You WILL lose something important. If I make it so some of taken damage gets absorbed by armor, then as long as armor is kept in repair you should be relatively safe. Weapons don't have damage values yet, so that needs development. As is, all attacks currently have the same potential damage. If I make some weapons (relatively) non-lethal, that's doable with the current system. Blarg, lemme explain.
As is, you have both Health and Toughness. Either being depleted too far can kill you. Toughness is at its base, equal to twice your health. During a damage roll two dice are rolled by each party. If the attacker wins one and loses one, damage goes to Toughness. If the attacker wins both, damage goes to Health. If defender wins both, they manage to avoid damage. If Health hits 0, you enter a Critical State during which all Health Damage becomes Critical Damage which can permanently maim or kill you. If Toughness hits 0, you pass out and fall unconsious until your Toughness rises back above 0. If hit again, toughness goes into the negatives. If your toughness falls below -(MaxHealth), then you die. Of course, if you manage to avoid an attack you take no damage and so avoid the damage rolls. Possible uses for armor would be giving you Armor Points which can take damage for you, and instead of taking Health Damage when hit you just take Toughness Damage. Of course, take too much damage and your armor will break, leaving you open to normal damage again. That's current version of combat. Any advice?

So it is hack-and-slash, like D&D and Mage, okay. Seems like it'd work great.

Really? I don't know the term. I got the critical damage idea from Dark Heresy. Hmm. I don't think you'll be able to block while in critical damage, so from that point you'd not be able to take Toughness Damage. Critical State is when you want to get the hell out of dodge or have your friends cover you.
Not too sure how to play weapon modifiers. Maybe the weapons can pierce armor, or add some extra damage?

That's what my mentor and the older people have been telling me.
Good luck figuring your system out. : )

Got some boss concepts drawn up. Good luck with that.
In other news, the magic system is hecktic, complex, and finnicky. Which is just how it should be. There is no MP so you can cast all you like but there are some drawbacks, such as spells not doing exactly what you want them to if you fail a roll. Spells work by combining Essence and Augment runes to create magical effects, though failing a roll may void part of the spell and cause it to go awry. Each character can equip up to three runes, so you can mix and match as you please. Runes come with stat bonuses as well, so upgrading your runes is how you level up.
The three rune types are: Essence Runes : These runes provide base spell effects. You cannot cast without an essence rune. Do to this, they are sometimes called 'casters'. Augment Runes : These don't do anything (besides provide stat bonuses) on their own, and must be combined with essence runes to have any special effects. When casting, if you choose to combine an augment with an essence, the spell effect will be modified. You can combine more than one augment with an essence per cast, and can swap equipped runes in battle (though this will modify your stats accordingly and takes a turn). Form Runes : These runes can't be combined with any other runes, and only target the one equipped with them. Form runes provide self boosts when activated. Like Essence and Augment runes, activating a Form rune can fail if you flub the roll, so be careful relying on them.

Wow, this just keeps getting more and more complex! I may have a hard time initially because I've never played a tabletop RPG before, just sayin'...

You should have seen the Dark Heresy rulebook. It's like 2k pages long.

It's one of the reasons I was a very disorganized GM. ANYWAY, got some boss concepts. The Badlands Bosses are...well, very bosslike. I appear to be jacking a lot of stuff from Norse Mythology for this, so that's a thing.
ANYWAY. So I was thinking we could try a combat test to see how combat goes. Something short. I'd prefer to do it over an IM or something so it goes quick. Anyone know any sites that are good for digital dice rolling?

Okay, some input would be nice on these. 1 : Like, how much damage boost should weapons give? 1 for regular weapons, 2 for strong ones, 3 for really strong ones? 2 : Armor. I'm kinda going between light and heavy? I figure heavy is resistant to armor piercing rounds and may provide a bit more AP (armor points), but would be more expensive and would lower your agility?

Alright, the first draft of weapon and armor damage is done, runes are pretty much done for now, haven't tested skills yet.
Would anyone like to volunteer to create quick and sloppy characters to have a test battle using my system for data collection?

Sure I'll volunteer! What do you need specifically?

Well at the moment, another volunteer.
Not too much, I'll send some character creation info and you can jot someone up. Where should we do the test?
