Midori could feel her face burning from embarrassment and it wasn't going to cool down anytime soon. She was grateful to Mack for stepping in and yelling, even though the four-armed demoness was frightening to look at. Going back to cleaning, Midori made sure to stick with Meela the entire time since she had no desire to face the other girls.
"I'm sorry...I'm not used to doing anything like that. Women are not supposed to be cruel and loud..." Midori answered. When Meela asked about the Siren from yesterday, she had to stop a moment and think. "Um...Honestly I don't know much. My hair just took her food and she didn't react...I'm sort of glad she didn't. I heard she tore a guard apart late on, and I am guessing she would have done the same to me. She was pretty though, even if she had a muzzle."
Midori continued to scrub the floor with the damp rag, trying to think of what else to say. "Do you know anything about Block D, Meela? Maybe I should ask Puck later...He seems to know a lot."

"So she's the passive-aggressive sort. And she had to wear a muzzle too? Interesting..." Meela paused, trying to wrap her head around the idea. So they kept someone like her up on Block D, who appeared to be calm but could turn in an instant. But what did that tell her about the others on that Block?
"If I hadta guess about Block D, then, I'd say that's where they keep the most dangerous inmates. The ones who appear all sweet 'n innocent, then turn around 'n kill ya when yer feelin' secure." She shrugged, dipping her rag back into the water. "Don't apologize about earlier though, ya just need time to toughen up. Hell, ya think I survived the military for 200 freakin' years by bein' all soppy 'n demure?" The Gremlin barked a laugh, making a few others stare at her.

"200 years, wow- I'm sorry, but I never expected you to be so old." Midori laughed. "You see I'm still 19. As in I don't just look 19, I am 19. Youngest in my family. Demons live up to 100+, so I still have a lot to catch up on. But apparently time flies until you turn 90, so I don't have that long to wait I guess." Midori laughed again, dipping her rag into her bucket and wringing the excess water out.
"I'm just...Scared though...What if I spend my entire life here? Miss Lilli spent more than fifty years in this place...I don't think I can even last a week. I just..." Midori sighed, "I just want to go home..."

"Well yeah, I know. The thing with Gremlins is we technically can't really die of old age. Somethin' has to go an' off us. Hell, the oldest Gremlin I know's close to 1500 years old! We can't all be youngins like yerself." Meela grinned, shaking her head.
"An' at least you have a home to go back to. My family shipped me off the the military when I was 13. I don't even know if my town's still around. It was right in the middle of the bombing zone during the Crimson Wars, between the East and the West..." She sighed, remembering it all too clearly.

"I-I'm sorry...I shouldn't have said anything." Midori apologized, not sure how to move on with the conversation now. She should have known that talking about her family in the Asylum was a no-no. 'I wonder how many of these inmates even have anyone waiting for them...' She thought, a frown forming on her face.
"...Hey!" Midori suddenly perked up and looked at Meela with a smile, "When we are released, want to come back to Jingoku with me? I know my small town wouldn't be to your liking, but we could find another home for you!"

Meela looked up, startled.
"You-- You want me to come with you? But-- You know nothing about me!" She shook her head, her mind reeling. Why would she offer that? If she was back home, she would have never offered that. In the military, it was you against the world. The second someone offered you a helping hand, they'd--
No Meela, don't think about him! Remember your promise!

"It doesn't matter, you're nice and someone as nice as you would be fun to travel with!" Midori said with a big grin, "I don't have many friends back at home, I talk to just my family. Though I was never allowed to leave my room, so maybe that had something to do with it..." She stared into space for a moment, remembering those days in her dark room where all she could do was lay down on her tatami mat and wait for someone to get her.
Shrugging, she immediately went back to cleaning. "I'm serious though! We'll get out of here for sure, and I'll help you find a new town to settle into. How does that sound?"
A succubus that was not too far from hearing range let out a laugh. Midori turned to look at her and raised a brow. "W-what's so funny?"
The succubus let out another laugh, "You are, of course. You can't leave her sweetie, it don't matter how hard your work or how nice you are."
Another female inmate joined in, "The only way you'd leave this place is in pieces, that I assure you."
"But there has to be a way, they can't keep anyone here forever." Midori said.
The succubus was now shaking her head, an obnoxious smirk on her face. "You can't be this stupid. No one leaves Hallow Asylum alive, two-mouth. No one. So both of you quit dreaming and shut up. I preferred working here when the sounds of whiny brats weren't present."

Meela stared at Midori in sheer disbelief. How could that girl be so hopeful, after everything? Didn't she realize she was in an insane asylum?!I may be planning my escape already, but I already knew I couldn't just up and leave! Forget what I said earlier, poor Midori has at best a 30% chance of survival... So what do I do about that? I can't take her with me when I escape, she'll be nothing more than a hindrance. This place may be entertaining, but I'll get bored eventually...
She picked up her bucket, moving down the line to the next shower and started cleaning around the drain. The other creatures moved away from her, possibly from the stench that still permeated from her. I suppose I'm stuck with her. Maybe if I can make her tougher, we could both escape. Hell, she has to be useful for something, right? I have time anyway, since I need to make Shard's wings... She looked up, glancing over at the other guards. One of them, a Dragoness, was deep in conversation with another guard, not even paying attention to the inmates before her. On her belt was a small switchblade, well used. An idea started forming in the Gremlin's kleptomaniac brain. She sidled closer to the Two-Mouthed Woman, keeping her voice low and ditching her distinctive accent altogether.
"Midori, perhaps there is a way to get out of here, but we're going to have to work together, and you're going to need to do exactly what I say. It'll take some time, perhaps as much as a year, but if it works we'll be free to go back to your home. Will you do it?"

Midori didn't understand why Meela suddenly lowered her voice- she even dropped her accent, which was even stranger. Not wanting to cause any problems, Midori also began talking in a whisper. "A year? I can't do that! I need to get out now, I can't wait a year. I'll do anything to get out of here in a week! Just tell me what to do, I promise I'll try my best."

"Midori, if we rush, we'll mess up and end up dead or worse." She sighed, scratching the back of her head with her tail.
"First things first, we need tools and materials. See that Dragon that's chatting with the Hydra? I need you to distract them. Just ask questions, strike a conversation, do cartwheels, whatever as long as their focus is on you and not me. I'm going to walk past them and steal that nice switchblade on the Dragon's belt. Once I've taken and hidden it, I'll tap my bucket with my tail three times."
She grabbed her new partner in crime by the sleeve, staring intently at the girl's face. She then broke into a grin. "You got it?"

"You want me to distract them?" Midori asked, cocking her head to the side. Could she do it? 'Meela asking me a favor, and I want to be helpful...It shouldn't be hard, all I have to do is talk.'
"Alright, leave it to me." Midori stood up and straightened her kimono before walking over to the two guards who were chatting.
"Is something wrong?" asked the Hydra guard, her five snake heads staring down at Midori. The Dragon guard also began to stare at her. "Um, I..." Midori shook her head in an attempt to get rid of her anxiety. "I was just curious, you have five heads! I think that's pretty cool, do you have to spend time washing each of them? Do reptiles like you two even have to take a bath?"
"Get back to cleaning, Rotten, before I decided to rip off that braid of yours." The dragon snarled, showing her teeth. Midori tried her best not to show any fear and continued talking. "Oh there's no need for that, right? I mean, my hair will grow back anyway so it would mean nothing to use such wonderful teeth on it."
"You think my teeth are wonderful?"
"Why yes, they're really nice and white. I bet you take very good care of them! That must mean the Asylum provides great service for the employees!"
"You could say that, but the dental insurance here sucks- you'd think they'd hire another dentist for guards instead of the psycho one here who enjoys ripping out teeth." The dragon laughed.
"Yeah, maybe Dr. Carver should be the one in the Asylum, huh Esther?" The Hydra laughed as well. Midori giggled along with them, hoping that she was giving Meela enough time to do whatever she had to do.

Meela let out a small sigh of relief when she saw how easily Midori had managed to distract the guard. Well look at that, the girl's a natural!
She took her time slipping around behind the guards. It had to look natural, any suspicious movement would alert the guards and blow the whole mission. Once she found herself within striking distance, she looked around. All of the other guards were supervising various groups, not one of them looking her way. She shuffled by, pretending to look despondent as smoothly lifted the switchblade off the Dragoness' belt. Much to her delight, neither guard so much as twitched by her presence. She deftly slid the blade under her rag, shuffling off to a nearby area. She crouched, pretending to fix her shoe, and slipped the switchblade under the sole of her shoe. This may be a pain to walk with for a while, but I'll have to do my best.
She stood, tapping the bucket with her tail three times, just loud enough for Midori to hear it.
"Hey what's that smell? Ugh! Gremlin, get your ass over here!" The Hydra guard covered the nostrils of her five heads as best she could. Shit! Meela walked over, doing her best to keep from trembling.
"Yes, cap'n?" She saluted the guard, keeping a nonchalant smile on her face.
"You reek, go use one of the showers to hose yourself off! If you keep hanging around like that you'll knock someone out. And don't call me Captain, you're not on a ship." Her knees nearly went weak from relief.
"Aye ma'am! I was beginin' ta think I'd knock meself out too!" She dropped her bucket and rag, lithely hopping over toward the nearest shower and turning on the faucet.

Hours flew by as the inmates worked at their jobs. It is now around 4:00 PM and those who have been working hard have become weary.
"ATTENTION. ATTENTION. IT IS FOUR'O CLOCK. SHIFTS ARE COMING TO A CLOSE. ALL GUARDS MUST LOOK OVER THE INMATES' WORK AND MAKE THEIR APPROVAL. ONCE AGAIN, IT IS FOUR'O-CLOCK. ALL SHIFTS ARE COMING TO A CLOSE."

Mack, Gorgon, Esther, Mira (the Hydra), and a few more female guards forced all the female inmates in charge of the cleaning against the bathroom walls. Male guards could be heard doing the same thing in the bathroom on the other side.
"Hmm..." Mack walked across the sparkling showers, running both her right hands against the wall tiles. "If it's clean enough that I could see my face, you freaks can leave."
'How are we the freaks if she has four arms?' Midori thought, tilting her head to the side as she stood by Meela against the wall. Her arms were aching from all the cleaning. Who knew they were so kind to let off after only 4 hours. Or maybe they just felt like being nice today?
"Hmm..." Mack hummed as she looked over the showers. "Humph- this place still looks like a shithole, but I'm sick and tired of staring at you whores so I'm goanna let you go."
'This woman is so strange...' Midori thought again as the guards escorted the other female inmates out.
Gorgon slithered over the her. "Midori, would you like to go to the cafeteria? You still have 6 hours until sleeping hours. I suggest you leave soon before Mackenzie over there forces you to clean more."
"That sounds good," Midori looked down at Meela, "you want to come with me, Meela? You can ride on my head or shoulders if you're tired."

Meela stretched, twisting to work kinks out of her spine and knots out of her muscles. Who knew cleaning would be so much work?! She smiled gratefully at Midori.
"Thank ya kindly, hun! I just feel like I went ten rounds with a giant!" She compressed herself, flinching when it hurt more than usual, and hopped up onto her friend's shoulder. "Great job today, you were perfect!" The switchblade hung a bit heavily in her shoe, but it was well worth the extra weight.
